On behalf of all the members of the committee of LLSC, I would like to wish all our members a Merry Christmas and a very happy and prosperous New Year.
On Monday, December 16th, I attended Luton Town Hall as a member of the public for the Development Management Committee meeting regarding the full planning application for Power Court.
The first outline application presented to the same committee took place in 2019 to wide acclaim. Back then, we all thought that within a few short years, we would be attending matches in our new stadium. However, world events such as COVID-19, the war in Ukraine, and the cost of living crisis impacting plans in the 2020s meant it has been a very long road to travel. The delay at times has been excruciating, to say the least.
The Development Management Committee took their time to reach a decision, but they got there in the end with a unanimous “yes” to allow the stadium to be built. It was clear to the majority of the committee members what a huge economic and social benefit the development will bring to the town center, rejuvenating it beyond recognition.
I would like to pay tribute to all the people who gave up their free time to help make the plans of 2020 a reality. Let us not forget the struggles against Jayten’s plans to move us to Junction 12. Remember Capital & Regional’s efforts to try to stop the club’s ambitions to build at Power Court. These were long and hard battles that had to be won. When one battle was won, another arose, and then another, and another. It took a tremendous amount of effort from many unsung heroes, along with hundreds of hours of meetings with various stakeholders, including our local MPs and councillors, to overcome the challenges in our way. LLSC worked tirelessly with other organisations to counter those who sought to work against the club and its supporters. Of course, we would not have been able to achieve our aims without the support of you, our members, and the larger supporter base. When we are united, we are unbeatable. So thank you, one and all.
At the time of writing, as we look at the site of Power Court, it’s hard to believe that we are now so close to realising a dream that began all the way back in the 1950s. Within a few short years, we will at last have a stadium that is being described as a masterpiece of architectural design. We are truly on the brink of a new dawn in the proud history of this football club.
Before I sign off, I would like to remember all those supporters who are no longer with us. In particular, if I may, a certain Kevin Catlin. Without Kevin’s work in the early days, our task would have been so much harder. He is missed and will never be forgotten.
Merry Christmas,
Carpe Diem!
